In collaboration with the Metals and Engineering (M&E) industry, SEIFSA decided to establish the SEIFSA Training Centre as a way to funnel future artisans to its members and also to other related industries in desperate need of artisans.

In addition, the SEIFSA Training Centre (STC), holds full MERSETA, EWSETA and CHIETA accreditation as a training centre as well as NAMB accreditation as a decentralised trade test centre.

In an initiative to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the metals and engineering sector grow and thrive, SEIFSA have partnered with Aurik Enterprise Development, who specialize in developing and implementing supplier and enterprise development programmes as they have the necessary expertise and capacity to provide business support services to SMEs, working within the metals and engineering industry through SEIFSA’s Small Business Hub.

The Light Engineering Industries Association of South Africa (LEIA)has a membership of approximately 300 companies employing approximately 25,000 employees, which makes the Association the largest and most representative industry association federated to SEIFSA.

National level

SEIFSA’s management team represents employers’ associations, as the recognised voice of the metal and engineering industry, on a number of organisations that are critical to the success of the industry as a whole including:

  • SEIFSA, through its membership of these bodies, has over the years positively influenced legislation and policy affecting labour relations, skills development as well as economic and trade matters.

Industry level

At industry level, SEIFSA, with the mandate received from the respective Associations negotiates collective agreements covering wages and conditions of employment with the trade unions. The Federation also represents employers on the boards of the Engineering Industries Pension Fund, the Metal Industries Provident Fund, the Metal and Engineering Industries Permanent Disability Scheme, the Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council Sick Pay Fund, the Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council and the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Seta (merSETA).

Importantly, as a member of an Association federated to SEIFSA, the Agreement that was concluded with the industry trade unions on 23 August 2017 is honoured and applicable until 30 June 2020.

The wage increases for this year of 6.75% and next year of 6.5% have been agreed with the industry’s trade unions who are party to the MEIBC, meaning that no further negotiations on any other monetary adjustments need be entertained at company level.

Individual company level

SEIFSA provides a comprehensive range of services and products of direct benefit to Associations and their members.
